I knew this song for many years but I misunderstood the lyrics back then. Thanks to auto-shuffling of my music service, the song popped-up while I was driving home from meditation practice around a month ago. Yesterday, it suddenly became clear to me what this song is about. E.g., "Chanting the mantra, peace on earth", "Some kinda druid dudes lifting the veil", "Projecting our images in space and in time", "you got to let it, you got to let it go". I think he wrote down his meditation experience.
Though Mr. Lennon raised up in Catholicism, he said, "But the whole religion business suffers from the 'Onward, Christian Soldiers' bit. There's too much talk about soldiers and marching and converting. I'm not pushing Buddhism, because I'm no more a Buddhist than I am a Christian, but there's one thing I admire about the religion [Buddhism]: There's no proselytizing." (link)
In here, it claimed John finished this song after reading "Mind Games: The Guide to Inner Space by Robert Masters and Jean Houston (1972)". However, John (and Beatles) went to India to learn meditation back in 1968. It was four years before the book's publication. Therefore, I put the book's influence on the song in a smaller role. I didn't see anyone else talking about this song's connection with meditation. So, I would like to write it down here.
